The data infrastructure behind
smarter research investment
I build the analytical systems and evidence base that major research organisations use to evaluate portfolios, identify strategic gaps, and demonstrate impact - from automated pipelines processing millions of records to AI-driven tools that transform how teams work.
Your board is asking what your research investment has achieved
You need to demonstrate the impact of years — or decades — of funding decisions. Not just 'what did we fund?' but 'what difference did it make, and how do we prove it?'
You're shaping a research strategy and need to see the whole field
You want a data-driven picture of where the research is, who's doing it, and where the gaps are — so your next strategy is built on evidence, not assumptions.
You want your team to do this kind of analysis independently
You're tired of expensive subscriptions and one-off reports that expire. You want tools and infrastructure your team can operate, built on open data, with no vendor lock-in.
Not a generic consultancy.
I've spent years inside research organisations. I understand how funding decisions get made, what different internal and external audiences need to see, and what evidence is needed every step of the way. Every engagement starts from your strategic question, not from a methodology looking for a problem.
Start with the question
What do you need to know? What decision does this inform? I work backwards from your strategic need, not forwards from a dataset.
Assemble the evidence
I draw on open data infrastructure and advanced data science techniques, which are tailored to your question.
Build what's needed
Sometimes it's a one-off analysis. Sometimes it's a tool your team will use for years. I build useful things, from automated pipelines to interactive dashboards to strategic reports.
Quality-check the evidence
I run a formal QA stage before conclusions are final. This includes independent review by trusted external experts in my network (under NDA), structured data validation checks, sample-based manual review, and clear reporting of confidence and limitations.
Make it actionable
Analysis only matters if it changes decisions. I present findings in ways that boards, strategy teams, and researchers can actually use — not just technically accurate, but strategically clear.
Collaborating with Jorge on this mapping project was both an education and a productive delight! We completed the first ever mapping of dementia research in the UK, the analyses shedding important light on the field: what research is underway, who is doing it and how does it mesh with service and policy priorities?
Jorge's methodical and data driven approach, including qualitative interviews with experts in the field, has produced a wealth of easily accessible information that shows the huge impact the charity's funding has had over the past 60 years.
Jorge's innovative analysis and helpful approach were very useful to us in evaluating the impact of our John Goldman Fellowship programme. I would highly recommended working with him.
Jorge was the architect of the Blood Biomarker Challenge, an initiative that not only advanced our research agenda but also attracted significant funding and key collaborators. His knack for building relationships and understanding the bigger picture makes him an invaluable asset.
Jorge has been instrumental in revolutionising our processes. His automated peer-reviewer tool significantly increased our efficiency and upended the way we did peer-review. His commitment to continuous learning and improvement, combined with his innovative approaches, have been invaluable.
Jorge was able to uncover incredibly valuable information about the IBD field in the UK, that will help us shape our next research strategy. He gave us new insights that have changed our view on what the field needs and what our next steps should be.
He didn't just help us retrieve the data we had in mind - he introduced innovative ideas we hadn't considered and helped us calculate indicators that genuinely reflect what matters to us. His work has enabled us to build a flexible, open-source platform.
Work that shaped funding strategies, informed research priorities, and helped organisations decide what to do next.
Blood biomarker landscape that launched two national clinical trials
Bibliometric landscape analysis that identified the strategic opportunity for blood-based Alzheimer's diagnostics and their economic evaluation in clinical settings - leading to the Blood Biomarker Challenge, ~£12M in external investment, and two major UK clinical trials.
Designing a vendor-independent Bibliometric Platform - British Heart Foundation
Designed a metric framework of ~30 indicators and built blueprint code for a vendor-independent bibliometric platform linking together 4 unique data sources and an LLM API.
Evaluating six decades of women's health research - Wellbeing of Women
Using AI tools, bibliometric analyses and expert interviews to evaluate decades of research investment for their 60th anniversary.
Strategic analysis and technical infrastructure, shaped by your question. Here's how the pieces fit.
Portfolio Evaluation
Comprehensive analysis of research investments across decades. Grant-to-paper matching, researcher career tracking, leveraged funding, and downstream impact assessment at scale.
Landscape & Gap Analysis
Mapping entire research fields to identify strategic opportunities. Bibliometric landscapes that reveal where gaps exist and where investment could be transformative.
AI-Powered Research Tools
Custom-built tools using LLMs, RAG, and semantic search. Automated peer-reviewer matching, portfolio classification, and intelligent document analysis systems.
Open Data Infrastructure
Building pipelines that process hundreds of millions of records from open sources — OpenAlex, patent databases, grant registries — with no proprietary dependencies. See the patent-to-publication pipeline →
Let's talk about what your
data could tell you.
Whether it's a portfolio evaluation, a strategic landscape, or an AI-powered tool — I'd welcome a conversation about what you're trying to achieve.
